This calculator estimates a female body shape from bust, waist, high-hip, and hip circumferences, then reports waist-hip ratio. The shape is a fashion category for outfit planning — not a health diagnosis or a target you have to hit. WHR is the more useful health figure of the two.

Formula

All difference cutoffs are in inches. Metric entries convert with 1 in = 2.54 cm, then the same rules run. Matching shapes are listed in this order and joined with "and" when more than one rule fits.

Waist-hip ratio is waist ÷ hip, rounded to two decimals.

The algorithm is from Lee, Istook, Nam, and Park (2007), International Journal of Clothing Science and Technology. There is a wide size range inside each shape, and some bodies do not match any of the seven.

A 2005 North Carolina State University study of more than 6,000 women found about 46% banana/rectangle, just over 20% pear, just under 14% apple, and only 8% hourglass.

Bust and hips are equal, and the waist is 12 inches smaller, so the result is Hourglass. Waist-hip ratio is 24 ÷ 36 = 0.67.

36 in bust, 34 in waist, 41 in high hip, 42 in hip

Hips are 6 inches larger than the bust with a high-hip/waist ratio of about 1.21, so both the spoon and triangle rules match: Spoon and Triangle. WHR is 34 ÷ 42 = 0.81.

What does the Body Type Calculator measure?
It estimates a female fashion body shape from four tape measurements — bust, waist, high hip, and hip — using a seven-category clothing-science algorithm. It also reports waist-hip ratio (WHR), which is a better health signal than the shape name itself.
How should I take the measurements?
Stand straight with arms at your sides. Keep the tape snug, not compressing the skin. Bust is over the fullest part of the breasts in a well-fitted bra. Waist is the smallest circumference at the natural waist, just above the belly button. High hip is the upper swell over the pelvis, about 7 inches (18 cm) below the natural waist. Hip is the largest circumference over the buttocks.
What are the seven body shapes?
Hourglass (bust and hips close, with a defined waist), bottom hourglass, top hourglass, spoon, triangle, inverted triangle, and rectangle. Some measurements match more than one rule and show both names (for example Spoon and Triangle). A few proportions do not fit any category.
Is body shape a health diagnosis?
No. Shape names are fashion categories, not medical advice or an ideal you must meet. Waist-hip ratio is the result to treat more seriously: the WHO uses a female WHR above 0.85 as a marker of abdominal obesity and higher health risk.
What is a healthy waist-hip ratio?
WHR is waist circumference divided by hip circumference. A 34-inch waist and 40-inch hip is 0.85. The WHO classifies women above 0.85 (and men above 0.90) as having abdominal obesity. NIDDK also flags women above 0.8 and men above 1.0 as higher risk from fat distribution.
